Daphne Graeter

Hello and welcome!

My name is Daphne, and I am an ambitious student journalist at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. I write for The Post, Athens, an independent, student-run newspaper.

I was selected to be the Opinion Editor for the upcoming school year, guiding over 50 others in persuasive and concise writing. Alongside that role at The Post, I am also a podcast host for a series called "What Goes Unsaid."

Ethics in reporting is crucial, and the values of the Ohio University Society of Professional Journalists understand just that. I was also selected to be the Vice President of SPJ's OU chapter and could not be more proud of the efforts the chapter has worked toward.

The Food and Drug Administration finally banned the use of Red 3 in beverages, candy and other foods in the U.S. Red 3 is a synthetic dye that produces a bright red cherry color and has been found to link to cancer in animals. Red 3 is no longer permitted to be used in cosmetic lipsticks, eyeshadows and drugs applied to t...

Daphne’s Dispatch: Cities need ice rinks

In recent years, ice rinks all over the Midwest have been shut down due to the enormous amount of money needed to make mandatory repairs. The necessary sum for repairs can reach up to millions of dollars, initially putting the needs of the cities above the ice rinks, leaving the facilities to close. The loss of ice rinks leaves cities without the opportunity to pursue ice sports.
Ice skating and ice hockey are two ice sports that generate the most revenue for ice rinks. As rinks close, these te...

Daphne’s Dispatch: Construction in Athens disrupts town and lives

Ongoing construction around various parts of Athens and Court Street has disrupted the lives of residents, business owners and Ohio University students. Construction is mandatory to restore roads, walkways or buildings but passersby may feel the construction obstructs living comfortably in an already smaller town such as Athens.
A large concern for the Athens community has been the hindrance of uneven bricks that make accessibility difficult to get around Uptown Athens. The Athens City Commissio...

As tuition is increasing at Ohio University and four-year publicuniversitiesaround the country, people may begin to think of pay over their passion when thinking of future careers.

Daphne’s Dispatch: Political opinions can strain friendships

There’s a time in most lives when opinions, especially political ones, can strain friendships. As the upcoming presidential election gets closer, discourse concerning political stances may present itself. But above all else, please don’t let this be a reason why friendships end.

Daphne’s Dispatch: Women may never feel safe

To be a woman right now can be terrifying. I wish that each time I went on social media, I didn’t see a headline about how a woman was killed or injured by someone else just for existing. Women may never feel safe because of the constant threat of danger that is present today.
A current case that is extremely heavy on my mind is the murder of Laken Riley. Riley was a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University in Georgia who went on a jog on the morning of Feb. 22. She was found dead in a...

Daphne’s Dispatch: Let student journalists report

Student journalists can be extremely misunderstood. People often unwarrantedly suspect bias or believe an article lacks ethical value because it was written by a student journalist. They are often overlooked because they are deemed to not have credibility like professional journalists.
The word often skimmed over is “student.” Students are actively engaged in learning new skills to open up their minds and develop new perspectives on the world. Although student journalists are still learning key...
